Grenache for WSET: the blender that carries the Midi
Grenache is the variety that makes hot, dry, windy places work. It tolerates conditions that would ruin most fine-wine grapes, and it appears across the syllabus more often as a blend component than under its own name, which is exactly why candidates underestimate it. What WSET asks you to know
At Level 2, recognition: a widely planted variety of southern France and Spain, high in alcohol, low in acidity, giving red-fruited, soft-tannin wines and a large share of the world's dry rosé.
At Level 3, you are expected to explain why its growing habits suit hot dry regions, account for its role in blends, and distinguish its major regional expressions.
The framework
Three ideas carry most of the marks:
- Built for heat, wind and drought. Grenache ripens late and needs sustained warmth, and it is unusually tolerant of drought and wind. That combination is why it is so often grown as a low, untrellised bush vine, a form that is self-supporting in wind and shades its own fruit. Where a syllabus question asks why bush vines persist in the Mediterranean, Grenache is the answer to reach for.
- High alcohol, low acid, soft tannin. It accumulates sugar readily, so alcohol runs high, while acidity stays low and tannin is light to medium. It also oxidises fairly easily, giving relatively pale colour that browns with age. On its own it can lack structure, which is precisely why it is usually blended.
- The blend is the point. In the southern Rhône it is the backbone of Châteauneuf-du-Pape and Côtes du Rhône, typically joined by Syrah for colour and pepper and Mourvèdre for tannin and savoury depth, the combination known as GSM. Blending is not a compromise here, it is the mechanism that supplies what Grenache lacks.
Beyond the Rhône, Priorat in Catalonia produces the most concentrated expression, from old, low-yielding Garnacha on the steep slate soils known locally as llicorella. In Rioja it is a traditional blending partner for Tempranillo, adding body and red fruit. In Sardinia it is Cannonau, and in Australia old-vine plantings in the Barossa Valley and McLaren Vale have been rediscovered as a serious varietal category rather than blending stock.
It is also one of the world's principal rosé grapes, central to Tavel in the Rhône, to Navarra in Spain, and to Provençal blends. Two mutations, Grenache Blanc and Grenache Gris, are worth knowing by name, the white version contributing body and low acidity to southern French whites.
How Grenache shows up in tasting
Medium ruby at most, often paling towards the rim earlier than its weight suggests. Strawberry, raspberry and red plum on the nose, with dried herbs, white pepper and a warm, sometimes confected character in riper examples. On the palate the signature is the mismatch: high alcohol and generous body against low acidity and soft tannin. If a red feels warm and full but slips away without grip, Grenache is a strong candidate. Contrast it against Syrah and Shiraz, its usual blending partner.
