WSET Level 3 Tasting Paper: Time Management

The WSET Level 3 tasting exam is short, and time is the hidden examiner. You taste two wines blind and complete a full SAT for each in a tight window, which leaves no room to stall on a tricky glass. Most candidates who underperform here knew the vocabulary; they simply ran out of time or froze on one assessment. This guide is about pacing, not palate. For the framework itself, see the WSET SAT explained, and for a full run-through, the Level 3 tasting paper walkthrough.

Know your time budget before you sit down

The tasting paper gives you a fixed, limited window for two wines, so think in terms of roughly half the time per wine and hold to it. Walking in with a rehearsed split removes the single biggest risk: spending so long agonising over the first wine that the second is rushed. Decide your per-wine limit in advance and treat the halfway mark as a hard line to move on.

Allocate minutes within each wine

The SAT has a natural order, and each section deserves a rough time share rather than open-ended attention:

The common error is lavishing time on appearance and nose, then rushing the palate and conclusion where the marks actually concentrate.

Commit and move on

Marks are lost to hesitation more than to wrong calls. If you cannot decide between medium and medium-plus acidity, make the closest call and move on rather than circling back repeatedly. The SAT rewards a complete, decisive grid over a half-finished, agonised one. You can flag a borderline assessment mentally and revisit it only if real time remains at the end, never at the cost of finishing the second wine.

Train the pace, do not just learn the words

Tasting under time is a motor skill, and the only way to build it is repetition against a clock. In practice, time every drill to the real per-wine allowance, complete the full grid out loud or on paper, and stop hard when the time is up even if the grid is incomplete. Doing this for a few weeks turns the exam clock from a threat into a rhythm. Build it into your wider plan with the 8-week Level 3 study plan.

FAQ

How long do you get for the WSET Level 3 tasting exam? A fixed, limited window for two wines. Plan on roughly half of it per wine and hold to that split.

How do I avoid freezing on a wine in the tasting exam? Make the closest call and move on rather than circling back. A complete, decisive grid scores better than a half-finished one.

Where should most of my tasting time go? The palate and the conclusions, where the structural and quality marks concentrate. Keep appearance and nose brisk.
