Napa and Sonoma for WSET: California's two counties on the syllabus

Napa and Sonoma are the two California counties WSET tests directly. The marks come from placing the principal AVAs, connecting climate to style, and articulating the modern stylistic debate. This is an orientation; the regional drill belongs in your course materials and our app.

What WSET asks you to know

At Level 2, recognition: California's two most prestigious counties, Cabernet Sauvignon dominates Napa, Sonoma is more varied (Pinot Noir, Chardonnay, Zinfandel).

At Level 3, you're expected to place principal AVAs in each, articulate the cooling influences, and discuss the Judgement of Paris (1976) and the modern stylistic debate (riper Parker-era vs neo-classic restrained).

The framework

Three ideas carry most of the marks:

US labelling rules to know: 75% varietal labelling threshold, 95% vintage, 85% AVA.

How Napa and Sonoma show up in tasting

A Napa Cabernet reads: deep ruby, medium-plus acid, firm tannin, full body, high alcohol, with ripe blackcurrant, blackberry, cedar, vanilla, sometimes mint. A Russian River Pinot Noir reads: medium ruby, medium-plus acid, soft tannin, medium body, with red and dark cherry, sometimes cola or sweet spice — California cool-climate Pinot. A Sonoma Coast Chardonnay reads: pale to medium lemon, medium-plus acid, medium-plus body, with stone fruit, citrus, often restrained oak.

FAQ

Difference between Napa Valley and Napa County? Napa Valley AVA is a wine designation; Napa County is the political division. Almost all Napa wine comes from the Napa Valley AVA.

Why are Carneros and parts of Sonoma so cool? San Pablo Bay sends cold air and fog up through the Petaluma Gap into the southern county.

What is the Judgement of Paris? A 1976 blind tasting in Paris where Californian Chardonnays and Cabernets beat French equivalents — a turning point for New World wine reputation.

What grape is dominant in Napa Valley? Cabernet Sauvignon. Merlot, Cabernet Franc, Petit Verdot, Chardonnay also significant.

Are Napa and Sonoma the only quality California regions? No. Santa Barbara County (Sta. Rita Hills), Mendocino (Anderson Valley), Central Coast, Paso Robles all produce serious wine — but Napa and Sonoma are the most testable at WSET.
